HOW TO PACK (WITH THE LEAST AMOUNT OF DISRUPTION)

By Sharon Bregman, President of 360 Déménager

To properly assemble a box, tape along the flaps that meet and run the tape at least 6 inches up the sides of the box. Then run another strip of tape parallel to the center tape between the center and the end of the box. Do the same on the other side of the center line. You now have 3 pieces of tape, one running the length of the seam where the flaps meet and up the sides of the box, one to the right of the seam line and one to the left of the seam line. Now run 3 pieces of tape across (perpendicular) the 3 pieces and up the sides of the box. These 6 pieces of tape will secure the box when it is lifted and moved. Turn the box open side up and you are ready to start packing.

You now need to decide what to pack first. It is the least disruptive to pack items that you do not use/need every day. For example: start with books (the library). Assemble several small book cartons. Start with a shelf at a time. Do not make the boxes too heavy. If that shelf requires a second box, start a new box but stop when that shelf is complete. You will be able to replace your books on shelves in your new home in some order resembling their placement in you current residence.

Keep an inventory list

As you pack each box and label/number the outside with a large marker, keep a notebook with the same numbers in one column and the contents of each box in the next column.

Start a fresh page for each room.

The exterior label/number should be such that you will know where to place the boxes in your new home upon arrival and how many boxes you should have.

Remember to mark your boxes in a way that will indicate TO YOU what is inside them. You need to know which boxes were packed in each room of your home, what is inside them and how many boxes you have.

Move onto linen or clothing not being worn for the next few days or weeks. Then do extra dishes and pots and pans that you will not be using. Eat on paper and use plastic utensils for a few days if need be.

Pack small pieces of toys, shower curtain hooks, paper clips etc. in zipper baggies before putting them into a packing box.

If you have children, leave their rooms intact for as long as possible. They can be packed quickly a day before you move.

Keep a box handy for perishables if your new home is close enough, drive them over. If not, it is best to dispose of perishable foods.

Never mark the outside of a box to indicate valuable or desirable contents. The box may not arrive at its new destination. For example, do not mark a box LIQUOR or JEWLERY or STERLING.

When you are packing dishes or other breakables, bunch up some paper and place a good 2 to 3 inches of crushed paper on the bottom of the box before you start to place anything into the box. Wrap all breakables well and when the box is not quite full, add some more crushed paper on top and down the sides as extra cushioning.

Never pack your boxes too full or too heavy.

Run at least 6 strips of tape along the top of the box to resemble the way you taped the bottom.

If the contents of the box are fragile, or might spill if the box is tipped, write fragile with a large marker on the outside of the box. Also draw a big arrow pointing up on the outside of the box to let everyone know not to tip the box.

Many movers recommend wardrobe boxes for clothing. Here is a tip. Pack folded clothing into your suitcases. You need to move the suitcases anyway. This way you save on boxes. Another trick to use if your new home is within driving distance – lay a king or queen sized sheet on the floor. Take hanging clothing from the closet with the hangers and lay it on the sheet so the hangers point to one corner and the bottom of the clothing points to the opposite far corner. Tie the two corners at the widest point together over the clothes in a loose knot. Bring up the other two corners (head and foot of clothes) and tie them into a loose knot. Lay the bundle into the trunk of your car and when you arrive at your home, untie the sheet and hang your clothes. They will not be wrinkled and there is no need for expensive wardrobe containers.

Pack the contents of bureau and desk drawers to prevent spillage if drawers open during the move. This also makes the furniture lighter and easier to move.

Set aside valuables and important papers you will need for the move/sale/closing etc., as well as any papers whose loss would inconvenience you (see section 14 of our ToDo Guide for an expanded list). Do not put them into a packed box. Store them in a small fire-proof file box which you can lock. Carry the file box with you in your car or put it with your carry on luggage if you are taking a plane.

Pack a handy items box for your first night and day in your new home. It should include: scissors, utility knife, flashlight, cups, paper plates, can opener, napkins, garbage bags, towels, a shower curtain and hooks if needed, toilet paper, tooth brushes, tooth paste, soap, snacks, daily medications, other toiletries used daily, pens and pads, local phone book, sponge and hard surface cleaner, favorite (sleep) toys for your child, food, bowl and leash for your pet, a change or two of clothing, baby food, diapers, formula, bottled water, etc.

Cindy Myer, Ridgewood Moving Services

Moving means making a serious transition. Even though individuals work hard to make sure their “big day” goes well, mistakes do happen. Listed below are some of my favorite suggestions:

Don’t Trash the Move by Moving your Trash: Start preparing for your move as soon as you decide to relocate. Staging ones home for sale begins the process of eliminating clutter and a great time to throw out. It’s amazing how much stuff we do accumulate over the years, we all do it and moving gives us a great excuse to visit that garbage can. You will be saving yourself money and time!!

Be Organized: I suggest prior to a move you purchase a binder, folder or portable file case that can be used for centralizing your important papers. A one stop place that you’ll be able to find documents, bills, prescriptions, bank records, keys, etc. any items you’ll need while going through the moving process.

Communication: A good question to ask your Moving Consultant during the estimate is how does the office handle communication between the customer (or shipper) and the moving crew. For example; one of our clients told me on an estimate that she was allergic to peanuts. As I spoke to her further, I found out that even if she comes in contact with an item that someone touched that just ate a food product with peanuts, she could get severely ill. At Ridgewood Moving Service, we have a drivers sheet that is includes all the important correspondence between the sales/office and movers. In addition, the paper work is looked over by operations and key issues written on the job board. The crew leader becomes aware of all the details prior to the move. This includes materials needed for the move as well as concerns of the clients.

Personal Items: If you have sentimental items, jewelry, a favorite photo, etc. that means a great deal to you, move it yourself. For your own peace of mind, I suggest you move these items of extreme personal value.

Donate: When a client is moving into a smaller space they often have the problem of having too much furniture, whether it’s a home or business. There are so many charitable organizations ready and willing to take these items off your hands. I have a Resource List available if you need some ideas. Email me; cindymyer@ridgewoodmoving.com and I’ll email this list to you. This resource list was provided to me from one of my Professional Organizer friends and I find it to be very useful.

EBay: I recently sold my swing set and trampoline that was unused in my back yard for years. This is a great avenue to get rid of back yard clutter, make some money and save the expense of having someone disassemble these items for you. I use a woman who specializes in the sales process from the listing to all of the correspondence and just takes a fraction of the sale. I can share her name with you or if you have the time, do it yourself!!

Staging: Since I’m in the process of selling my home and downsizing, I feel I can share through personal experience. Before I even put my house on the market, I started shopping around. What I discovered was interesting! There were so many homes on the market with so much clutter, filth and quite outdated and still commanding a pretty hefty price. The homes that I visited that were neat, freshly painted and de-personalized were appealing. I suggest, before you even consider putting your house on the market, you look into “staging”, whether it’s through a professional or just by your own research, it is worth the time. A few brush strokes can add many dollars to the sale of your home or business. In addition, when the time comes to get ready for your move, you’ve gone through much of the cleansing process already.

Cost Effective: The most cost effective move is the one that is boxed up and ready to go on moving day. Loose items such as wall hangings, art work, pictures, lamps, cords and all loose contents are packed up. A local move is usually based on time therefore, the more prepared the quicker the moving process will be. All the moving crew will need to do is prep for the move by wrapping the furniture and any other floor, door or wall protection needed for a smooth move out. At destination, make sure that someone is present to direct the movers. If boxes are labeled and clear and you have pre-determined where items are to go, you’ll have a nice transition.

Packing: The most common issue that I see when dealing with a move is the packing part. Many times a client will have all good intentions of packing everything but life gets in the way. We try to anticipate what we reasonably think the client will get to and what we may have to pack up the day of the move. Ridgewood Moving has been in business for over 40 years, seeing the same scenario occur time and time again. Ridgewood Moving provides a packing service with a team of “women” packers. They can pack up the entire home or business or just a portion. The Moving Consultant can provide you with an estimate for a full or partial pack upon request.

Recycled Boxes: We have been thinking green long before it was chic! After a move we pick up used boxes and bring them back to our warehouse. Theses boxes are offered to our customers free and we feel it’s a great service and environmentally friendly at the same time. I suggest you take advantage of any moving company that offers this service. We recycle used paper as well, when available. This unprinted paper or newsprint is used for breakables.

Another packing tip: I suggest when packing dishes and breakables you use a “dish pack”. These boxes are of heavier weight and marked with arrows facing upward. When using these boxes; place heavier pieces on the bottom, layer with lots of paper, then wrap dishes then place in box like a dishwasher (vertically), place another layer of paper then place light cups or tea cups on top. Professional movers will know that fragile items are in these boxes and will handle with the utmost of care.

Our promise: We are interested in doing business with you today, next year and ten years from now. To that end our commitment is to offer the highest level of professional service, with the cleanest, safest and most organized environment for all your important “stuff” – from the contents of your home to special collectibles from your office furnishings and equipment, to your excess inventory.

As important as hearing is to our daily lives, it is also one of our major health concerns. Over 30 million people in the U.S have hearing problems .These are people of all ages and from all walks of life. Most hearing problems develop gradually, often causing the hearing impaired person to slowly withdraw from normal social and business situations. Fortunately, the vast majority of people with hearing difficulties can benefit from either medical treatment or hearing aids or both. Even people who have been told they have “nerve deafness” may be helped by the advanced technology of today’s hearing aids.

10 Warning Signs of Hearing Loss

People seem to mumble more frequently.

You hear, but have trouble understanding all the words in a conversation.

You often ask people to repeat themselves.

You find telephone conversation increasingly difficult.

Your family complains that you play the radio or TV too loudly.

You no longer hear normal household sounds, such as the dripping of a faucet or the ringing of a doorbell.

You have trouble hearing when your back is turned to the speaker.

You have been told you speak too loudly.

You experience ringing in your ears.

You have difficulty understanding conversation when in a large group or crowd.

If you experience these problems repeatedly or in combination, they may indicate a hearing loss. To find out for sure, call for a free hearing evaluation.

This is a list of things to steer clear of when you are seeking to obtain financing for a home. The following items may prove to be a detriment when you wish to move forward with the loan process.

Don’t buy or lease an auto!
Lenders look carefully at your debt-to-income ratio. A large payment such as a car lease or purchase can greatly impact those ratios and prevent you from qualifying for a home loan.

Don’t move assets from one bank account to another!
These transfers show up as new deposits and complicate the application process, as you must then disclose and document the source of funds for each new account. The lender can verify each account as it currently exists. You can consolidate your accounts later if you need to.

Don’t change jobs!
A new job may involve a probation period, which must be satisfied before income from the new job can be considered for qualifying purposes.

Don’t buy new furniture or major appliances for your “new home!”
If the new purchases increase the amount of debt you are responsible for on a monthly basis, there is the possibility this may disqualify you from getting the loan, or cut down on the available funds you need to meet closing costs.

Don’t run a TRW report on yourself!
This will show as an inquiry on your lender’s credit report. Inquiries must be explained in writing.

Don’t attempt to consolidate bills before speaking with your lender!
The lender can advise you if this needs to be done.

Don’t pack or ship information needed for the loan application!
Important paperwork such as W-2 forms, divorce decrees, and tax returns should not be sent with your household goods. Duplicate copies take weeks to obtain, and could stall the closing date on your transaction.

WASHINGTON D.C., March 20, 2009 — For the second consecutive year, Dellridge Health & Rehabilitation Center has been selected for the 2009 Best of Paramus Award in the Rehabilitation Services category by the U.S. Local Business Association (USLBA).

The USLBA “Best of Local Business” Award Program recognizes outstanding local businesses throughout the country. Each year, the USLBA identifies companies that they believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community.

Nationwide, only 1 in 70 (1.4%) 2008 Award recipients qualified as 2009 Award Winners. Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2009 USLBA Award Program focused on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the USLBA and data provided by third parties.

By Martin C. Daks, Montclair New Jersey

July 11, 2005

Harvey D. Homan faced a quandary two years ago when he took over as CEO of Urovalve, a startup maker of medical devices in Newark. Should he risk falling behind in keeping up the company’s books, or should he shell out big bucks for a high-priced CPA? Homan initially farmed out the work to a CPA firm but has recently switched to a lower-cost alternative, a daily money manager, or DMM.

A partner from the CPA firm told me Urovalve was just paying too much for bookkeeping and other services, says Homan. He suggested we get a daily money manager for the day-to-day record keeping while the CPAs would continue to handle the taxes and other high-level work.

DMMs occupy a twilight zone between bookkeeper and CPA. They fill a valuable need for businesses and individuals that have complicated finances but don’t really warrant the services of a CPA, says Ron Acher, who runs Ron Acher Services in Montclair. Some DMMs focus on personal services for the elderly, or for their grown children who may be stuck trying to care of their own family and finances and now have to worry about Mom or Dad, too. For these kind of clients a DMM serves as a financial concierge for anywhere from $40 to $75 an hour. Acher, a former electrical engineer who holds an M.B.A., hung out his shingle late last year. His background includes stints with startups and 15 years with Con Edison in New York City, where he was director of internal audit.

Another DMM, Gina Pirrone, launched her business in 2001 after a 20-year career with a market-making specialist firm on Wall Street. Pirrone runs GCP Financial in Ho-Ho-Kus, which focuses on senior citizens, disabled persons and executives who are too busy to attend to their personal finances. At the Wall Street firm I worked in accounting, benefits and other areas, says Pirrone, who recently became a certified senior advisor, a designation awarded by the Society of Senior Advisors in Denver, Colorado, that signifies that the holder has studied legal, financial and health issues as they relate to senior citizens. I realized that I liked to deal with people, and being a DMM lets me do that while leveraging my financial background.

Pirrone’s responsibilities include preparing bills for the signature of a client or a guardian in the case of a disabled person, balancing checkbooks, investment tracking, filing health insurance claims, tax organization and going through clients mail and separating important notices from junk. Part of the job is to analyze bills for discrepancies. She helped one elderly client who received a grossly inflated $500 water bill get a credit for future usage. My business keeps growing through networking and some advertising, says Pirrone.

The demand for daily money managers is growing across the country, says DMM Marcia Turner, who is president of the Virginia-based Association of Daily Money Managers. The organization began with six members in 1995 and today has about 400 members. We’re seeing growth just about everywhere among members who service individuals and businesses, says Turner. Many times we’ll get a phone call from someone who says they were balancing people’s checkbooks, negotiating with creditors and performing other services without even realizing that they basically were DMMs.

Turner worked as a bank manager before starting a DMM company called Your Everyday Assistant eight years ago. It handles bill paying and other services for senior citizens and their grown children and for nonprofit organizations. She says that demographics and other trends are driving the demand for money managers. According to Turner, as people age and families scatter across the country, adult children are increasingly concerned about their parent’s ability to handle finances. She says, however, that a trusted money manager can fill that void.

We’re working on trying to set up a standard certification, she says. But it’s a challenge since daily money managers do so many things. We’re not bookkeepers, but we do bookkeeping. We’re not accountants, but we look at the numbers.

Email to mdaks@njbiz.com

Five things a DMM can do

Balance checkbooks

Review and prepare bills

Update financial records

Pull together information for an accountant or lawyer to review

Help an elderly or mentally disabled person with financial affairs

By Gina Pirrone, GCP Financial

Daily Money Management is relatively a new service, which addresses an issue facing many senior citizens: handling paperwork that never seems to end. Seniors frequently become overwhelmed with the amount of bills, investment, or medical statements and other mail they accumulate in a short period of time. Insurance and medical statements are often confusing or even contradictory. This leads to frustration and anxiety on the part of the senior. It is essential for seniors and their families to know that bills are paid along with appropriate allocation of assets and income. In addition, organizing paperwork required for income tax preparation, medical documentation and charitable contributions often means lower income tax payments each year.

Since Daily Money Managers (DMMs) often work with elderly persons living in their homes, the DMM can provide recommendations to their senior-serving professionals as needed. If they see that a client is in any way “at risk” due to impaired vision, physical limitations, or confusion, the DMM can make referrals to community resources, including geriatric care managers, attorneys, and accountants. However, DMMs do not take the place of these professionals. In many cases, DMMs work closely with them in seeing that their mutual clients receive the attention and service they need. The record keeping done by DMMs is often invaluable to the accountant at tax time, to the attorney in planning for long-term care costs, and to the care manager in evaluating costs of community resources to meet current needs.
